Holiday Decorations in Beacon are Judged by Tioronda Garden Club

The Beacon Arts Community Association (BACA) held a Holiday Decorating Contest for Beacon Main Street. Judging of Main Street's storefront decorations took place on Sunday, December 9. This year's judges consisted of three members of the Tioronda Garden Club: Ann MacLeod, Norman MacLeod, and J. Jaye Vaughn. Contestants were judged based on criteria including overall theme, creativity and presentation. After much deliberation, the judges selected the following winners:

First Place ($150) - Hudson Beach Glass, 162 Main Street Second Place ($75) - Objectiques, 462 Main Street Honorable Mention ($25 each to 3 winners) - - Beacon Barkery, 192 Main Street - Early Everything, 486-470 Main Street - Jacqueline, 478 Main Street

In addition to the above cash prize awards, the judges named six storefront windows as Runners Up deserving of special mention. These stores are RiverWinds Gallery (172 Main), Beacon Lights (209 Main), Beacon Wine Shoppe (335 Main), Beacon Fitness (420 Main), Windchime Realty (464 Main), and Manor House Realty (530 Main).

Norm MacLeod, who has participated in the judging in previous years, said: "This year it was very hard to judge- it was really very close. We saw so many wonderful decorations that we felt the need to recognize additional businesses as Runners Up for their efforts." Jaye Vaugh remarked that this year several stores used natural decorations that did not involve special lighting. The decorations, which ranged from "homey natural" to "elegant natural" decorations, were beautifully crafted with care and attention to detail. Another new element was the ecumenical nature of some storefront decorations, which celebrated both the Christmas and Hanukah holidays.

"Every year it's different," said Norm. "This year some stores were decorated that had never been decorated in the past. We hope this trend will continue in the future, as it makes Main Street more beautiful every year."

On behalf of the Beacon Arts Community Association, thanks go to our judges and to all the participating merchants and congratulations to the contest winners.

So come to Beacon enjoy the decorated specials shops and galleries, follow the Gingerbread Trail to find the wonderfully decorated GingerBread Houses and wrap up your holiday shopping. Shops, galleries and restaurants will stay open late Friday and Saturday for Candlelight Shopping on Main Street.
