Nicolas Barajas of Mahopac Selected to Participate in NY Times Student Journalism Institute
Ithaca College senior Nicolas Barajas, son of Mahopac residents Debra and Gonzalo Barajas, is one of 20 students nationwide selected to participate in the New York Times Student Journalism Institute. Held in early January at the University of Arizona in Tucson, the institute is an 11-day, hands-on journalism residency program offered to aspiring reporters, editors, photographers and designers who are student members of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ).
"I'm very humbled to get the honor to go to Tucson and work with such talented journalists," said Barajas, a communication management and design major in the college's Roy H. Park School of Communications. "This is a really exciting opportunity, and I'm happy I was selected."
Competitively selected based on an essay he wrote, clips or portfolios he submitted, and his previous journalism experience, Barajas will be offered the opportunity to sharpen his writing, reporting, editing, photography and multimedia skills while covering current events in the Tucson area and working under newsroom deadlines. He will learn from professional journalists from the / New York Times, Boston Globe/, and the Times Company's Regional Media Group
"The Times is delighted to again offer this annual program in conjunction with the NAHJ," said Jill Abramson, managing editor at the New York Times. "In this ever-changing media landscape, programs like this institute are essential to help newsrooms across the country recruit young, talented journalists from diverse backgrounds."
Coeducational and nonsectarian, Ithaca College is a nationally recognized independent college of some 6,100 undergraduates and 300 graduate students. Located in Ithaca, New York, it combines the individual attention of a small institution with the resources and offerings of a large university.
