William J. Merando

William J. "Hawkeye" Merando, age 67, of Nelsonville, died on Saturday, February 16, 2008 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie.

Born in Cold Spring on January 7, 1941, he is the son of Hazel M. (Brower) Merando and the late Philip A. Merando.

Mr. Merando, Mayor of the Village of Nelsonville, was the retired Highway Superintendent for the Village of Cold Spring. He was active in many community activities, including the Jaycee's, Nelsonville Fish and Fur Club, and was a 28-year member of Cold Spring Fire Company #1.

He is survived by his wife, Tina M. (Schmager) Merando of the home address; his mother, Hazel Merando of Cold Spring; three sons, William Merando Jr. of Cuddebackville, NY, Gabe Merando of Fishkill, NY, and Scott Merando of S. Williamsport, PA; two daughters, Missy Irwin of Argyle, NY and Gia West of Fishkill, NY and seven grandchildren. One brother, Philip A. Merando, Jr. of Cold Spring, one sister, Rose Story of Beacon, NY, many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews also survive him. Mr. Merando was predeceased by a daughter, Terri Lee Merando, and granddaughter, Mariah Merando.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10am on Thursday, February 21, at Our Lady of Loretto Church, 24 Fair St., Cold Spring followed by interment at Cold Spring Cemetery. Friends may call at the Clinton Funeral Home, Cor. of Parrott & Pine Sts. (21 Parrott St) Cold Spring on Wednesday, February 20, 2008 from 2-4 and 7- 9pm. Memorial donations may be made in Mr. Merando's name to the American Cancer Society, Hudson Valley Region, 220 Route 6, Mahopac, NY 10541.
