This was the band's first appearance in the parade and they made a fine showing, marching 2 miles up 5th Avenue, enjoying the many supportive Cold Springers, and the thousands of others, who cheered them on from the sidelines. The band marched proudly behind the Fire Department's color guard. The parade performance made it into NBC's national coverage of the parade as the last group shown on TV. Following the hosts' signing off the camera focuses in with a beautiful shot of the band marching below it.
The Pipes and Drums finished up Saint Patrick's Day with an evening performance at Carnegie Hall in the finale for the Irish band, The Chieftains. This traditional Irish music group has won numerous Grammy awards, and has served as the benchmark for Irish traditional music for the past four decades. The final concert number was performed to a raucous and enthusiastic crowd with representatives of several other bands joining in for the Breton tune, St. Patrick's An Dro. This rare opportunity to play on one of the most prestigious stages in the world will long be remembered by the pipe band and those attending.
