Verna Mooney Fitzgerald

Verna Mooney Fitzgerald, 88, of Southington, CT died Wednesday, August 13, 2008 in her home with her family by her side.

Born April 12, 1920 in Bloomfield, NJ, she was the wife of the late John Fitzgerald and the daughter of the late Joseph Mooney and Ruth (Boyer) Mooney.

Verna worked for over 25 years as a nurse's aide at Butterfield Memorial Hospital in Cold Spring, where she lived for over 35 years. She also worked as a nurse's aide in the Framingham Manor nursing home in Framingham, MA for several years, eventually retiring from the State of Massachusetts where she worked as an aide at Cushing Hospital in Framingham. In her later years, Verna lived in Ashfield and Greenfield, MA before moving to Southington, CT to care for her youngest granddaughter, Molly, upon her birth in 1993. Verna spent her life dedicated to caring for others, her patients as well as many friends, family and extended family members. She deeply touched the lives of those fortunate enough to meet her.

Verna is survived by her children: Timothy Fitzgerald of San Diego, CA; her daughter and son-in-law Eileen (Fitzgerald) and Kevin Meehan of Southington, CT with whom she made her home; Daniel Fitzgerald of Ashland, MA; a daughter-in-law, Chris (Wood) Fitzgerald of Whitinsville, MA; her sister, Betty (Mooney) Valentine of Cold Spring, NY; her brother-in-law Joseph Etta of Cold Spring, NY; her sisterin law and brother-in-law Margaret (Fitzgerald) and Paul Goetze of San Diego, CA; ten grandchildren, Robert Fitzgerald of Lebanon, NH; Michael Fitzgerald of Framingham, MA; Kellie Fitzgerald Hernandez and her husband Fred Hernandez of Ashland, MA; Amanda and Corey Fitzgerald and Shana Hayes of Framingham, MA; Maggie and Donald Meehan of New Britain, CT; Molly Meehan of Southington, CT and Tashia Baker of Fall River, MA; three great granddaughters, Lillian Cruz, Saray Hernandez and Layla Hayes of Framingham, MA and many loving nephews and nieces. She also leaves extended family whose presence gave her great joy throughout her life and who were close to her heart and her memory until the end. She was fortunate to have the love, support and care of Aaron Allen of Plainville, CT and Laureen Harper of New Britain, CT, both of whom were by her side throughout her brief illness and were with her in her final hours offering love and care as she departed this world.

Verna was predeceased in 2004 by her husband of 60 years, John J. Fitzgerald. a son, John J. Fitzgerald, Jr. of Whitinsville, MA; a brother, Chet Mooney of Middletown, NY ; a sister Marion (Mooney) Davis of Sparrow Bush, NY; sister-in-law, Catherine (Joan) Etta (Fitzgerald) and a brotherin law, Raymond Valentine both of Cold Spring, NY.

Verna and her family were provided with great comfort and assistance at the end of her life from the VNA Hospice Program who allowed her to complete her journey with grace and dignity in the comfort of her home. We'll see you next time, Granny.
