Six Easy New Year's Resolutions for Keeping Putnam Beautiful
by Walt Thompson, Keep Putnam Beautiful

Here are six simple things any of us can do- young, old, moms, dads and kids- that will do big things for all of us. All of our suggestions revolve around personal responsibility:

-Report a Litterer. If you see an uncovered truck with trash blowing out of it or a person in a car in front of you littering, use your hands free cell phone and immediately call the Putnam County Sheriff: 225-4300.

-Join a clean-up effort in your area. You'll meet others, and get some fresh air and exercise while you're improving your community. Keep Putnam Beautiful works with civic groups, schools, businesses and individuals on Adopt-a-Highway (free), Adopt-a-Road (free) and Adopt-a-Spot (free). We work with sponsors for 32" long litter-grabbers and Beautiful Trash Cans (see the newest one at TD Banknorth on Route 52.

-The third resolution- and this is a very big issue at Keep Putnam Beautiful- cigarette butts are, by far, the most commonly littered item in Putnam County. If you smoke, please carry a personal ashtray and always use public ashtrays when smoking outdoors.

- Recycle. Find out how to recycle in your area and do your part. Plastic containers with # 1 or #2 stamped on the bottom should go in a curbside recycle bin. Bottles, cans and many other common household products are recyclable. And be sure to "complete the loop" by buying recycled products whenever possible.

-Reuse the products you can. For instance...there are hundreds of uses for that plastic grocery bag! If the phone rings while you're painting, it helps keep a paintbrush moist. It can help keep a damp umbrella from flooding your purse or help fill an extra deep flower pot. Be creative and remember that every time you reuse a product, you're keeping it out of a landfill. Hannaford gives you a 5 cent credit for each canvas bag you use each time at checkout (other area supermarkets give you a 2 cent credit).

-Resolve to teach a child about the environment and recycling. It's so important that the next generations understand and respect our Towns and Villages…and it's a great way to spend some time with the kids. For some fun ways to get involved, see the CleanSweep USA site for activities and games for middle school-age kids, and check out the Just for Kids pages for ways that kids can help.

All of us working together are improving Putnam County for our families, tourists and businesses.
