Young Naturalists Donate Care Packages for Wildlife
Tim Adams, Wildlife Rehabilitator from the Warwick Valley Humane Society's Wildlife Fund, accepts donated gifts for injured animals from the Hudson Highlands Nature Museum's Young Naturalist Program.
The Young Naturalist Pre-K class at the Hudson Highlands Nature Museum decided to prepare a holiday gift to help those who help wildlife. So, this month, the Young Naturalists and their parents prepared baskets of donated blankets, towels, gloves, food, bandages, heating pads and animal carriers for wildlife rehabilitators in our area.
When the children were ready to present their gifts, Tim Adams, a New York State Licensed wildlife rehabilitator from the Warwick Valley Humane Society's Wildlife Fund, visited the class and explained to the children and their parents how their donated items would help the injured animals he cares for. Pam Golben, the Museum's Curator of Living Exhibits, introduced the Young Naturalists to a rescued Screech Owl. The Eastern Screech Owl, injured in a motor vehicle accident, was taken to a vet and had a broken wing. Her wing would not heal even after extensive rehabilitation. Ms. Golben explained how the Screech Owl lives at the Museum because she can no longer fly and take care of herself. The children learned that in New York, a wildlife rehabilitator must receive training and a license to help injured wildlife.
The Young Naturalists Pre- K Program runs from September to June for three and four year olds. An open house for the 2008-09 will be held February 5 from 4 until 6pm at the Outdoor Discovery Center, for further information, call 845- 534-5506, ext. 204.
