| Four 2007 graduates of the Communications Academy at Putnam/Northern Westchester BOCES' Tech Center recently received coveted scholarships during a poignant, pre-holiday ceremony, which included current and former students as well as current and former faculty.
Justin Rodriguez, from Yorktown, received the $500 Ingrid BoffiMemorial Scholarship, named in honor of an Advertising Art & Design teacher who began teaching at BOCES in 1984 and died of cancer in 2003. Justin is currently studying at the Art Institute of Philadelphia. Sandra Garofalo, Justin's Tech Center teacher, described him as a "great talent" who is never afraid to try something new.
Anthony Palmieri, from Carmel, was awarded the $1,000 Scott Purdy Memorial Scholarship, named in honor of a Communications Academy graduate who died of cancer in 1997. Mrs. Jean Purdy of Croton, Scott's mother, was on hand to present the scholarship on behalf of her son. Anthony, a graduate of teacher Angela Spreter's Computer Graphics class, is currently studying at the College of Westchester.
Jose Alvarado, from Yorktown, received the $1,000 Rosamaria Marinaccio Memorial Scholarship, named for the mother of a Communications Academy graduate. Jose was a student in Ms. Garofalo's Advertising Art & Design class and is currently enrolled at Westchester Community College.
Austin Sista, of Lakeland, received the $500 Tech Center Academy Scholarship. Also currently enrolled at Westchester Community College, Austin is a graduate of Ms. Spreter's Computer Graphics class.
During the scholarship ceremony, all four students acknowledged the positive impact their Tech Center experience had on their lives. "I wouldn't be anywhere without BOCES," Jose said.
