Butterfield Library Announces Children's Programs for Winter, 2008
The Julia L. Butterfield Memorial Library is excited to announce its programming for this season. Because of the increased hours- especially the full day on Saturdays- the Library can offer more of the programs that patrons have requested.
The six-week Story Hours will begin the week of January 14 and continue until the week of February 25. Bouncing Babies for infants 0 to 24 months will meet on Tuesdays at a new earlier time: 10am and will also be held on Saturdays at 10am. As always, this program is mostly free-play with soft toys, puppets, trains, Legos and simple puzzles. The hour concludes with a simple, age-appropriate story, familiar songs and bubbles.
Littlest Bookworms is a new story hour especially for twoto three-year-olds. The program will begin with an age-appropriate story and then toddlers and their parents or caretakers will be asked to join in some fun finger and movement games and sing-alongs. Free play will follow the circle time. To be held Mondays at 10am.
Lil' Bookworms is for preschool age children (ages fourto five-years-old) who are learning letters and rhymes. The focus will be on pre-reading skills and consist of two appropriate stories, a game and themed craft. To be held Mondays at 1:30pm.
Also for preschoolers, Play Math with Me, a three-part series of fun, math games led by Irene Keyes, will be held on Thursdays at 1:30pm on January 17, 24, & 31. Each week will be a different theme: Counting As We Go; Measure Up Measure Down; and Discovering Shapes. Advance registration is required for this program. For ages 3- 5 years.
Battle of the Books, Jr. returns with a refined format. Each season, one book will be selected to be read by all participants. Throughout the sixweek program, the children will be expected to read certain chapters and be ready to be quizzed on what they have read with trivia questions. For the final meeting, the group will be broken into teams for a "battle". The Winter session will feature Igraine the Brave by Cornelia Funke. The program is open to children in 2nd through 4th grade but participants should be able to read the book on their own. Visit the Library's Children's Page at www.butterfieldlibrary.org for an excerpt of the book. Weekly meetings will be held on Thursdays, at 3:30 PM, January 17 through February 28. Registration is required for this program.
Other children's programs will include the popular American Girl Doll Workshops, educational craft programs, a Pokemon Club and Battle of the Books. For more information about programming, contact the Outreach and Programming Coordinator, Maureen McGrath, at 265-3040. Or stop by the Library for a copy of the Winter, 2008 Program Guide.
