Putnam Symphony Orchestra is in Search of Musicians
The Putnam Symphony Orchestra will close its 31st season with a pops concert on Sunday, May 4 at 3pm. The performance will take place at the Brewster High School on Foggintown Road off of Farm to Market Road, approximately one half mile north of Route 312. Scheduled repertoire for this concert includes Javelin by Michael Torke, American Fantasia by Victor Herbert, Leroy Anderson's Syncopated Clock and Blue Tango, 01' Man River by Jerome Kern, Japanese, a recently discovered work by George Gershwin, works by John Williams, and selections from The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.
The Putnam Symphony Orchestra is a community orchestra comprised of musicians from the greater Brewster-Carmel area and surrounding communities. Students, professionals, and amateurs make up the musician roster, as they did when the orchestra first performed in 1977. The diversity in talent and backgrounds of the individual members of the orchestra provides an opportunity for each to learn from the other as they work together and perform on stage.
Christine Smith will conduct the orchestra for the performance. Miss Smith, a professional flutist, holds a BFA Degree from SUNY at Stonybrook. She is a 1981 graduate of the Juilliard School of Music, Pre-College Division, and she holds a Master Degree in Education. She regularly performs as a soloist with the Doansburg Chamber Ensemble, and has been conducting the Putnam Symphony Orchestra since 1998.
The Putnam Symphony Orchestra is currently developing its musician roster for this concert and is in search of qualified musicians who would like to join the orchestra. All qualified musicians with an interest in performance are invited to join the orchestra, and should contact the conductor at (845) 228-4167 to discuss opportunities. Rehearsals for this performance begin on Wednesday, February 6 and are weekly from 7:30 to 9:30pm at the Brewster High School.
