Reorganization Meeting Puts Residents on Alert as to How Future Town Board Meetings Will be Conducted by Edward Paul Greiff
Newly sworn in Putnam Valley Supervisor Robert Tendy chaired his first Town Board Reorganization meeting on January 2, 2008. This annual occurrence is a legal requirement imposed upon all municipalities in which they must officially make these appointments before they can transact any municipal business in the new year.
But there is another outcome from such a meeting and that's the management style of the meeting's moderator; Town Supervisor Tendy. He set the tone and the mood for the meeting. It was well organized and dispensed with in an expeditious, efficient and business-like manner. For the most part audience interruptions were kept to a minimum and not allowed to disrupt the flow of the proceedings. But when it came to a Resolution to dissolve the Comprehensive Plan Committee the audience raised its objection, as did Councilwoman Wendy Whetsel.
Supervisor Tendy argued that the Committee was formed to develop a plan, they did their job, and now it was time to disband the Committee.
Councilwoman Whetsel and some members of the audience argued that the Committee members, in creating the Comprehensive Plan, had become extremely knowledgeable of the Town's needs. They knew what the Town wanted and how to accomplish those goals that would get the Town to where it wanted to go. And the Town would be remiss if they did not capitalize on this knowledge.
Councilwoman Whetsel then made a motion that the dissolution of the Comprehensive Plan Committee be tabled for a much longer discussion at the January 16, 2008 Town Board meeting. The motion was unanimously carried by the Town Board however, it left a bad taste in the mouth of the audience. They privately commented that "They (the Town Board) publish one thing in the agenda and then they do something else, you have to watch them."
