Galef Should Strengthen Sex Offender Act
Dear Editor:

I would like to express my deep concern over the recent decision by Southern District Judge Gerald Lynch, which weakens parts of the civil confinement law. On March. 14, 2007,Governor Spitzer signed the Sex Offender Management and Treatment Act. This law tightened regulations for convicted sex offenders and implemented civil confinement of sex offenders after they have fulfilled their jail term. Under this law, a detained sex offender who has a mental abnormality that predisposes him or her to commit a sex crime again could be confined.

This decision has the potential to be a very harmful ruling. Before someone slips through on a legal technicality, and we can be sure that it will happen, I call on Assemblywoman Galef and Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver to go back into session immediately to address this issue".

The current legislature must strengthen these parts of the law for the safety of the children and families of all New Yorkers. We must keep the most dangerous sexual predators off our streets and we cannot wait.
William Gouldman
Chairperson, Putnam Valley
Republican Committee
