PVMS Principal Honored for Making it Happen, in Technology
The Putnam Valley Central School District (PVCSD) is proud to announce that Putnam Valley Middle School (PVMS) Principal, Edward Hallisey, has been honored with the prestigious International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) Making It Happen Award. Making it Happen is an internationally recognized awards program for educators in the field of educational technology integration in K- 12 schools. The program identifies and rewards educational technology leaders around the world for their commitment and innovation. Recipients receive jackets honoring them for their accomplishments.
A nonprofit membership organization, ISTE provides leadership and service to improve teaching, learning, and school leadership by advancing the effective use of technology in PK- 12 and teacher education. Home of the National Educational Technology Standards (NETS), the Center for Applied Research in Educational Technology (CARET), and the National Educational Computing Conference (NECC), ISTE represents more than 85,000 professionals worldwide.
Recipients of the awards are educators who: - Apply available technology now - Move forward and don't look back -See students as real people -Teach through relationships, inspiring, encouraging, nurturing -Recognize that further change is necessary, but understand that it is a process -Realize that teacher empowerment is the key element to technology integration -Expect success
- Motivate through awareness and access to information
PVMS is the home of the four-year-old 1:1 Laptop Program, the innovative educational approach that by the autumn of 2008 will have put a school-owned laptop computer into the hands of every Putnam Valley student from grade five through grade twelve.
"When the program was launched in 2003, the students in grade seven were given 150 laptops to use during the school year," Mr. Hallisey explained. "Now we have 1,250 laptops in grades six through eleven. Next fall everyone from grade five through grade twelve will have them. Imagine that: our youngest 1:1 Laptop Program participants will have had eight years of technology experience before they ever get to college. It will put them at an entirely different level than any other high school seniors in this area. This is what's going to make our students special."
The Making it Happen program was created in 1995 to recognize the contributions of individuals, especially classroom educators, in the field of education technology integration in K- 12 schools. Since its inception, the program has grown into an internationally recognized awards program highlighting the dramatic role various educators, from the Secretary of Education to the classroom teacher, play in the learning process using high quality technology in the classroom. Designed for educators, the program identifies educational technology leaders around the world and rewards those individuals for their commitment and innovation. Since the program's inception in 1995, more than 300 pink jackets (black for men) have been awarded to outstanding educational leaders.
