February Safety and Preparedness Classes in Putnam/West Point Offered by American Red Cross

February safety and preparedness classes offered by the American Red Cross in Greater New York (ARC/GNY) - Putnam/West Point include full day programs that teach cardiopulmonary resuscitation

CPR) to administer to adults, children and infants to help save a life. Some sessions also include an AED (automated external defibrillator) component.

Classes at ARC/GNY - Putnam/West Point are held at The Lawlor Building (Route 311 and 164, Patterson), at St. Basil's Academy (79 St. Basil Road, Route 9D, Garrison) and at Building 2104, Visitors Center, West Point Hwy. (New South Post Road) at West Point.

The importance of CPR and AEDs recently received attention in Washington, where the U.S. House of Representatives passed a resolution introduced by U.S. Representative John R. "Randy" Kuhl, Jr. (RHammondsport, New York's 29th District) to support the designation of a week (first week in June) as National Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Automated External Defibrillator Awareness Week.

"It is critical that all of us know what to do during an emergency to help our families, friends and neighbors," said Representative Maurice Hinchey (D-New York's 22nd District), who co-sponsored the measure. "A key component of being prepared for emergency situations is to know how to help people who are suffering from breathing and cardiac difficulties. Classes provided by the Red Cross teach individuals how to correctly and effectively respond to breathing and cardiac emergencies using CPR and AED skills. I hope that everyone will consider taking advantage of the upcoming training opportunities, which can literally help to save a life in the future."

Upcoming scheduled Red Cross CPR/AED - Adult classes held at ARC/GNY - Putnam/West Point include:

* Friday, February 1, St. Basil's Academy (Garrison), 9am- 2pm. Cost $65. * Tuesday, February 12, West Point, 5- 10pm. Cost $65. * Friday, February 15, The Lawlor Building (Patterson), 9 am- 2pm. Cost $65.

Other scheduled CPR/AED classes teach applications for infants and children, and sessions also are available for professional rescuers. Red Cross class dates and times are subject to change.
