Franciscan Friars of the Atonement to Celebrate 100 Years of Prayer for Christian Unity Special Centenary Mass on January 20
Every January since 1908, the Franciscan Friars and Sisters of the Atonement have gathered in Our Lady of the Angels Chapel at Graymoor to pray for Christian unity. Today this observance is known as the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity and is celebrated by Christians of all denominations across the U.S. and around the world from January 18-25. When Fr. Paul Wattson, SA and Mother Lurana White, SA, co-founders of the Franciscan Friars and Sisters of the Atonement, first observed this annual period of prayer at Graymoor, it was called the Church Unity Octave. To mark the centenary and the 2008 Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, a series of programs and services are open to all.
On Sunday, January 20, 2008 at 11am James Puglisi, SA, minister general of the Franciscan Friars of the Atonement and director of the Centro Pro Unione in Rome, will be the presider and homilist for the Sunday Eucharist in Pilgrim Hall.
Rev. Dr. Adolphus Lacey, Pastor of the Mt. Olivet Baptist Church and President of the Peekskill Area Pastors Association will be the speaker on Tuesday, January 22, 2008 at 4pm Little Flower Chapel.
