Six Philipstown Kids Named Local Champions in Knights of Columbus Free Throw
Six boys and girls from Philipstown, ages 10 to 13, were named local champions of the Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship and have earned the right to compete at the district level in February with an eye toward moving on to the regional, downstate and state levels of competition. Loretto Council, #536 sponsored the local competition at the Capuchin Youth and Family Ministries Gym on Saturday, January 12. Twenty-five youngsters participated in this year's competition.
Trevor Van Brunt was the 10- year-old boys' champion (7 for 15). Nick Allen and John Hughes were both 11 for 15 in the 11-year-old boys' bracket which required another round of 5 shots to determine the winner. Nick took the top prize over John by shooting an amazing 4 for 5. Alexia Andreaopoulos won the 11- year-old girls bracket (8 for 15). In the 12-year-old bracket, Stephen Zalys was the boy's champion (8 for 15). Ian Thom was picture perfect by shooting 15 for 15 in the 13-yearold boys' bracket and Kelsey Flaherty won the13-year-old girls' division (9 for 15).
Each youngster who entered the competition received a certificate of participation. The local champions will each receive an engraved trophy and championship certificate from Loretto Council.
