Marist to Host Initiative to Find Global Warming Solutions

On January 31, Marist College will participate in "Focus The Nation," an unprecedented teach-in on global warming solutions. Marist will host events throughout the day, which are being coordinated by the college's Campus Sustainability Advisory Committee. All are open to the public.

Presentations by Marist faculty, staff, and students will be held from 9:30am to 4pm in the Student Center Cabaret on recycling and composting and their impact on efforts to address climate change; climate change and the economy; and the role of disciplines ranging from journalism to philosophy, history, economics, and psychology in providing perspectives on climate change solutions for a sustainable lifestyle.

The day will conclude with a 7pm panel of discussion in the Student Center Cabaret offering perspectives on the roles of environmental, business, and political groups in solutions to climate change. Confirmed speakers include Robert R. Dyson, chairman of the Marist board of trustees and a noted business leader and philanthropist; Dr. Sharon L. Nunes, vice president, Strategic Growth Initiatives, Big Green Innovations, IBM Systems & Technology Group; and Ned Sullivan, president of Scenic Hudson. Congressman John Hall has also been invited to participate.

"This event reflects the crucial function Marist and all colleges can play to educate for a sustainable future, so as to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs," said Dr. Paula Willoquet-Maricondi, chair of the media arts department at Marist and an event organizer.

Among the groups participating at Marist are Clearwater, Community Energy, the Dutchess County Resource Recovery Agency, Hudson Valley Clean Energy, Scenic Hudson, and Sustainable Hudson Valley.

More than 1,000 college and university campuses are participating in this national "teachin." Further information on the Marist program can be found on the college's home page, www.marist.edu, while details on events around the country can be reviewed at www.focusthenation.org.
