The Water is Wide Movie at Howland Library Screens in Honor of Black History Month
In honor of Black History Month, Howland Public Library in Beacon will host a special showing of the 2006 Hallmark Hall of Fame movie, The Water is Wide, starring Jeff Hephner and Alfre Woodard on Friday, February 15 from 7- 9pm.
Families, friends, students, and teachers are invited to view this memorable movie based on the true-life experience and book of the same title by Pat Conroy. The movie details the efforts of a young teacher to communicate with the South Carolina Yamacraw Islanders who are nearly all direct descendants of slaves and who have had little contact with the mainland. Waste from industry threatens their existence unless they can learn a new way of life. But who will teach them?
Jeff Hephner stars as Conroy, the idealistic, young teacher who struggles to reach students aged 10-13, some of whom are illiterate, and none who know anything beyond Yamacraw Island. But his "going outside the box" "philosophy does not sit well with Mrs. Brown (Alfre Woodard) who runs the school.
Although this is not a children's movie, it is definitely suitable for families and students. Howland Library would also like to extend a special invitation to new teachers in the Beacon City School District. Don't miss this wonderful, Emmy-nominated movie that will leave you inspired. The library would like to thank Beacon resident Flora Jones for loaning them the movie for this special showing. For further information, please contact Ginny Figlia at 845-831-1134, ex.103.
