Two Philipstown Men Charged With Residential Burglary

Two Philipstown men have been arrested on criminal charges stemming from a reported residential burglary, the Putnam County Sheriff's Department has announced.

According to Putnam County Sheriff Don Smith, on January 11, 2008, a Perks Boulevard resident called the Sheriff's Office and reported that his home had been entered and approximately $7,000 in cash and $5,600 worth of payroll checks were stolen from within. Deputy Matthew Monroe responded to the scene and conducted the initial investigation.

The case was then assigned to Investigator Thomas Corless of the Bureau of Criminal Investigation. Over the following several days, investigators and deputies developed information resulting in the arrest of two 19-year-old Philipstown men and the recovery of approximately $6,000 in cash and the stolen payroll checks.

Matthew J. Dengler and William A. Kivel, both of Philipstown, were arrested and charged with Burglary in the Second Degree, a class "C" felony. Both men were arraigned before Philipstown Justice Alan Steiner. Mr. Dengler was remanded to the Putnam County Correctional Facility in lieu of $10,000 cash or $20,000 secured bond. Mr. Kivel was also sent to jail. His bail was set at $15,000 cash or $30,000 bond. Both are due in court at a later date.

Upon conviction of Burglary in the Second Degree, a sentence of imprisonment of up to fifteen years in a New York State Correctional Facility may be imposed by the court.
