Parents of Local Pre-Schoolers Succeed in Establishing a 'Winter Tots Playground' Indoors More spaces sought, to augment new Philipstown Rec program
A group of local parents, sharing the common need for the indoor equivalent of Cold Spring's "Tots Playground" to afford their pre-schoolers a place to expend their energy in the colder months, have been assisted in this quest by Philipstown Recreation, as a new, three times a week series of 'play sessions' has just opened its doors at the Rec Center at Glenclyffe in Garrison.
The parents originally thought of starting up their own play space collective, somewhere in Cold Spring Village, but the realities of medical emergencies, insurance issues and other factors quickly made the group refocus on approaching the Town of Philipstown with their needs. The group addressed the issue via a letter with signatures sent to Supervisor Mazzuca. To their happy surprise, instead of the expected "tangle of bureaucracy," their request was handled very promptly, through a referral to Amber Stickle, Director of Philipstown Recreation, who came up with an immediate offer of the three 2-hour play sessions, which will run through the end of April.
The schedule for these sessions, which take place in the Rec Center's gymnasium is as follows:
-Wednesdays, 12:30-2:30pm
-Thursdays and Fridays, 9- 11am
The token fee is $1.00 per session or $20 for 25 sessions if paid in bulk. Interested parents should inquire about the general rules at Philipstown Rec.
This program opened to the public as of January 16, 2008. If all goes well, it will become a yearly program that will be advertised in their regular brochures.
The group is currently looking for other spaces to fill the time slots of an average week. They are exploring various options, both in public and private spaces. A goal is to offer variety in choices and venues. Once the schedule is finalized, it will be posted on public announcement boards.
