Vera A. Logan

Vera A. Logan, of Nelsonville, passed away suddenly on Tuesday, January 15, 2008. She was 72. Born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on December 28, 1935, she was the eldest of three children born to Brazilino de Abreu and Arlette Pinho de Abreu.

Mrs. Logan immigrated to the United States in 1959, residing in New York City and Hopewell Junction, NY before settling in Nelsonville in 1975 where she was employed as office manager for George A. Logan & Sons, Inc. Described by friends as the "Angel of Cold Spring", she was well-known for her infectious smile, boundless energy, and elegant sense of style. Her daily errands brought her to many local shops and businesses where her brief visits forged life-long friendships. Many have commented on her perpetual good mood, positive attitude, and constant pursuit of fun - something she usually accomplished through a game of bingo or the turn of a slot machine.

She enjoyed traveling, and between frequent trips to Europe and Brazil, she served as co-pilot on weekly Sunday drives with her husband, dance partner, and best friend of 34 years, Douglas Logan. She cherished the time with her family and was always the ultimate cheerleader for her children and grandchildren. She never missed a special occasion or a chance to celebrate all the little milestones of their lives. She will be loved and missed by all.

An active and compassionate citizen of the community, Mrs. Logan was a member and past president of the Cold Spring Lion's Club and in 1997 was named Lion of the Year. She was also a member of the Highlands Garden Club in Cold Spring and the Philipstown Seniors. Her charitable contributions were numerous, and in her limited spare time, she actively volunteered for the Beacon Animal Rescue Foundation, Salvation Army, and the American Field Service's foreign exchange program.

She is survived by her beloved husband, Douglas W. Logan, of Nelsonville; her sons, R. Kent Millard of Providence, RI, Christopher J. Millard of Baltimore, MD, and Jonathan W. Logan of Portland, OR; her daughter, Stephanie L. Ruffin of Richmond, VA; her sister, Norma Freitas of Rio de Janeiro and six grandchildren. She is predeceased by her parents and brother, Ronaldo de Abreu.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, January 19, 2008 at St. Mary's Episcopal Church in the Highlands, 1 Chestnut St., Cold Spring, followed by entombment in Fishkill Rural Cemetery. Friends called at the Clinton Funeral Home, Cold Spring, on January 18.

Donations in Mrs. Logan's name may be made to the Cold Spring Lions Club, PO Box 308, Cold Spring, NY, 10516 or the Beacon Animal Rescue Foundation, 60 Simmons Lane, Beacon, NY, 12508.
