Putnam Valley High School Math teacher and dedicated community servant Linda Cefaloni ends all of her personal emails with this quotation, which pretty much sums up her philosophy of life. Together with PVHS's school nurse, Pamela Adamovich, RN, another lifelong community volunteer, Mrs. Cefaloni shepherds a group of 50 or more students in the PVHS Make A Difference Club's year-round community service and fundraising work.
On January 10, the club hosted a visit from two proud parents whose family has clearly made a difference in the world. Eileen and Dennis Storen live in Mahopac. Their son, Ken, a graduate of Notre Dame and a former Peace Corps volunteer, founded the Touching Tiny Lives program in Lesotho, a small country at the tip of the African continent which is completely surrounded by the Republic of South Africa.
While working in Lesotho, Ken became personally aware of the heartbreaking challenges faced by the children of victims of HIV/AIDS. In 2004 Ken took in one orphaned child who had been abandoned by his closest relatives because they could not afford another mouth to feed. The program grew from that single act of kindness. Today he, his wife Colleen, and a staff of local caregivers run the Touching Tiny Lives (TTL) safe home with financial support from the individuals and groups that donate to the nonprofit Touching Tiny Lives foundation (www.touchingtinylives.org).
At the club meeting, after a moving presentation by the Storens about the origins of TTL and the work it continues to do, Mrs. Adamovich, Mrs. Cefaloni and their club members proudly presented a check for $3000 to Mr. and Mrs. Storen. These funds represent part of the proceeds from the fall, 2007 Make a Difference Club Stay Awake-A-Thon, an annual fundraiser that has benefited many local and worldwide organizations.
