Boat Reported Stolen From Mahopac Leads to Arrest of Putnam Valley Man
Putnam County Sheriff Donald B. Smith reports the arrest of a Putnam Valley man on charges stemming from the reported theft of a 1987 Bayliner motorboat valued at approximately $2,500.
On November 12, 2007, a Mahopac resident called the sheriff's office and reported that his motorboat and trailer had been stolen from in front of his home. Then Investigator Thomas Velotti, who subsequently was promoted to the rank of Senior Investigator with the Bureau of Criminal Investigation, was assigned to the case. After conducting several interviews, the senior investigator ascertained information as to the whereabouts of the stolen vessel. Senior Investigator Velotti responded to a private residence in Mahopac and recovered the boat. Further investigation led to the development of a suspect in the case. The senior investigator applied to the Town of Carmel Justice Court for an arrest warrant charging 49-year-old John Behan, Sr. of Putnam Valley, with Criminal Possession of Stolen Property in the Fourth Degree, a class "E" felony.
On January 23, 2008 at about 8:45pm, Senior Investigator Velotti and Investigator Michael Nalbone traveled to Mr. Behan's home and arrested him on the warrant. Mr. Behan was returned to the sheriff's office in Carmel for processing after which he was arraigned before Carmel Town Justice Joseph Spofford. Justice Spofford remanded Mr. Behan to the Putnam County Correctional Facility in lieu of $10,000 cash bail or $10,000 secured bond. Mr. Behan is due to appear in Carmel Justice Court on January 29, 2008.
Upon conviction of the crime of Criminal Possession of Stolen Property in the Fourth Degree, the court may impose a sentence of imprisonment for up to four years in a New York State Correctional Facility.
