Traffic Sign Removal Leads to Arrest of Put Val Man

The Putnam County Sheriff's Department reports receiving a report from an area resident who had witnessed a male subject remove a "10 Ton Weight Limit" sign from its post alongside Canopus Hollow Road in the Town of Putnam Valley on January 13, 2008 at approximately 4:15pm. The complainant told the Sheriff that they had observed the license plate number of the suspect's vehicle and provided it to Deputy Sheriff James Stasiak, who handled the call. The deputy then traced the number to William D. Munsell, 18, of Putnam Valley. Upon questioning, Mr. Munsell admitted to the deputy that he had taken the sign and threw it away by the roadside "as a joke". The deputy arrested Mr. Munsell and charged him with Petit Larceny, a misdemeanor. Mr. Munsell was released in his own recognizance pending a January 29, 2008 date in Putnam Valley Justice Court.

If convicted of the misdemeanor charge, the defendant could face up to a year in jail and a fine of up to $1,000.
