PVHS Students Score a Decisive Win in First Round of the News 12 Challenge

On November 9 Putnam Valley High School (PVHS) seniors Tom Ricci, Jackson Gilman-Forlini, and Hannah Schmidt, and juniors Kristen Macher and Nick O'Neill, plus 30 enthusiastic family members and friends, rode the fan bus to the Hotel Pennsylvania in Manhattan for the first round taping of the 2007-08 Challenge, a televised academic quiz bowl. They were coached and accompanied by their advisor, longtime social studies teacher, Ed Schimtt, who is also the District's K-12 Coordinator for Social Studies and the advisor to the PVHS chapter of the National Honor Society. Putnam Valley won decisively, over Roosevelt High School of Yonkers, by a score of 260 to 130.

Principal Richard Herlihy and his assistant, Maureen Bellino, were among the fans who rode the bus to New York City. Ms. Bellino reported, "They answered questions from categories such as Chemistry, John Adams, Physiology, Quadratic Equations, Roman Mythology, and Circles, among others. The PV team did very well in all the categories and each team member contributed to the win. The set had a 'Jeopardy' look and the entire show was done very professionally."

The Challenge is a fast-paced quiz that incorporates broad- based questions on a variety of high school academics as well as pop culture. The starting field of Westchester/Hudson Valley schools included 32 high schools from Orangeburg to Armonk. You can catch The Challenge every weekend on News 12 through the end of June 2008. The PVHS vs. Roosevelt segment aired on January 19, and a festive gathering of contestants, friends, and families met in the PVHS cafeteria that evening to watch the PVHS/ Roosevelt broadcast projected on a big screen and enjoy pizza and refreshments provided by the PVHS PTSA.

The PVHS team will return to NYC early in 2008 to play a different opponent in Round 2. After 31 weeks of competition, one team in each region is crowned champion, winning $2,500 dollars for their school. The final winning teams from each region go on to The Challenge Championship, where they square off against one another in a tri-state showdown. The school that is crowned The Challenge Champion will receive $10,000 in prize money. Each student participating in the final Challenge Championship game will receive $500.
