PV Elementary Students Create "The Peace Gallery"
On Tuesday, January 15, 2008, the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Putnam Valley Elementary School's (PVES) auditorium became a "Peace Gallery," with colorful and creative poster representations of each participating class's concepts of peace.
That day each PVES class took special time to tour the Peace Gallery, whether going to or coming from special classes, lunch, or making a special trip to view the exhibit.
According to PVES teacher Susan Baumgartner, who helped to coordinate the exhibit, "this Peace Gallery was inspired and organized by our school's Character Education Committee. All grades from K through 4 were involved. The purpose of the exhibit is in celebration of Martin Luther King's birthday and to promote the message of peace in our school, home, and community."
The only instructions were that classes Illustrate examples of how students can promote peace in school or at home, by listing peaceful messages or quotations, examples of peaceful actions, and/or students' ideas of "What Peace Means to You."
