Burke Hospital Hosts Wheelchair Games
The Burke Rehabilitation Hospital will host its annual Wheelchair Games Saturday, September 27, 2008 from 8am to 5pm. The event will be held on Burke's campus, 785 Mamaroneck Avenue in White Plains.
The invitational, funded by corporate sponsors and other donors, permits disabled persons to excel physically in a variety of track, field and table tennis events. Known for therapeutic benefits, wheelchair sports also build strength, coordination, endurance and selfconfidence.
More than 90 athletes are expected to compete. Participants are grouped into four classes according to age and ability - a Future Division for children ages six and younger; a Junior Division that covers ages seven through 21; the Adult Division for ages 22 to 39; and the Master Division for those over 40. Helmets are required for track and slalom events.
Field events include the club, softball, javelin and discus throws. Track includes 20,40,60, 100, 400, 800, and 1,500 meter races.
There is a $25 registration fee for athletes, including lunch. Admission is free for spectators and the general public. The event includes entertainment, silent auctions, and raffles.
