If Music Be the Food of Love, Play On...at Valentine's Fest This Saturday
The 1st annual Valentine Festivus - a family fest of music, cookie baking, and valentine making, all free, will take place this Saturday, February 9, at St. Mary's Parish Hall, from10:30am to 1pm. There is one very special 'from the heart' component: valentine makers will be encouraged to make a few extra valentines for some special people in our community.
There are several group homes near by for elderly, disabled, or recovering people and Cold Spring resident Kathleen Pemble, LoveNotes Music Director and organizer of Valentine Festivus, is busy contacting some of these organizations to find out who might need a little extra love on Valentine's Day. "I am hoping that lots of families come and enjoy the event. They'll be able to make some fun, simple valentines for each other, and for some people who they don't even know. It's a great way to show young children about giving a little extra time to benefit a less fortunate community member."
The music at Valentine Festivus will feature several professional musicians, including Kathleen Pemble with Eddie Denise on upright bass and Marc Barden on guitar. In addition some LoveNotes guitar students will be performing, and there will be an American Sign Language teacher showing many of the songs as 'Sing & Sign', so everyone gets to brush up on 'I love you' and "Happy Valentines Day!" in ASL.
Valentine revelers will also have the chance to cut out heart-shaped cookies and decorate them after they are baked. Kathleen Pemble, who teaches Early Childhood Music as well as guitar and voice, is also hoping to enlist some Valentine Volunteers to bring live music into some of the residential programs near by. "It will be wonderful to have a multi-generational group of players and singers who were willing to go and share some music time with people who may not get the chance to participate in actual live acoustic music." There will be a sign-up sheet available for those families who want to find out more about it.
"Combining LoveNotes, Valentines Day, live family music and community service is coming together very nicely," says Pemble. "I only thought of the whole thing two weeks ago and I already have people who are willing to help, the beautiful St. Mary's Parish Hall to use, wonderful musicians who have volunteered to play, plenty of valentine supplies...and some folks who will be really thrilled to get a home made valentine. I just hope that people pre-register so we have enough refreshments and cookie dough!"
