Greenway Awards $65,000 in 2007 Conservancy Trail Grants
Hudson Highlands Land Trust to receive $1,500

Mary Mangione, Executive Director of the Hudson River Valley Greenway, Senator Steve Saland and Senator Vincent Leibell are pleased to announce the recipients of the 2007 Greenway Conservancy Trail Grant Program. Applications were received from municipalities and non-profit organizations from throughout the designated Greenway area. Thirteen projects were awarded grant money totaling $65,000.

Hudson Highlands Land Trust, based in Garrison, will receive $1,500 towards their popular HHLT Take-A-Hike! program.

The Greenway Conservancy Trail Grant Program is an annual competitive grant funding opportunity available to communities and non-profits within the designated Hudson River Valley Greenway Area, which extends from Saratoga County to Battery Park, Manhattan. The program offers funding for trail planning and design, trail construction and rehabilitation, and trail education and interpretation, with emphasis placed on trail projects that seek to further the goals of the Draft Greenway Trail Vision Plan. This annual program has offered technical and financial assistance to municipalities and nonprofit organizations since 1995. Funding for the 2007 Greenway Conservancy Trail Grant Program was supported by Senator Sal and and Senator Leibell.

Mangione stated, "I congratulate each of the recipients of the 2007 Greenway Conservancy Trail Grant awards! Trails are an important recreational resource here in the Hudson Valley and we are proud that we can contribute to the efforts of municipalities and non-profits as they work to improve the connections between communities along the Hudson River, ultimately resulting in a regional trail system throughout the Valley."

Other awards locally include the Town of Rhinebeck - Rhinebeck Bike/Walk Tour ($4,900), the Winnakee Land Trust - Red Hook Heritage Breadbasket Trail ($5,000), Mount Gulian Society - Mount Gulian Trail Interpretive Plan ($5,000)

Hudson River Valley Greenway funding and assistance is available to all communities in the Valley that voluntarily pass a resolution to join the Greenway and support its goals. The Hudson River Valley Greenway is a State agency designed to encourage Hudson River Valley communities to develop projects and initiatives related to the criteria of natural and cultural resource protection, regional and local planning, economic development, public access to the Hudson River (as well as other regional and local resources), and heritage and environmental education. Currently, 242 out of the 292 eligible communities have joined the Greenway.
