Philip Baumgarten Scholarship Offered by the Cold Spring Area Chamber of Commerce
The Cold Spring Area Chamber of Commerce is accepting applications for the Philip Baumgarten Scholarship. Open to all area high school seniors - including Philipstown and Putnam Valley - the scholarship is named for Philip Baumgarten, a long-term resident of Cold Spring.
Mr. Baumgarten was the owner-operator of the former Hudson Peddler and was also a past president of the Chamber of Commerce, a member of the Cold Spring Lions Club, a volunteer at the Julia L. Butterfield Memorial Library and a Veteran of WWII.
In keeping with Mr. Baumgarten's example of dedication to community, the scholarship will be awarded to a student who has shown community spirit and commitment by volunteering for a Philipstown nonprofit or charitable organization and/or by working for or with a local business that is, if possible, a Chamber member. He or she can attend any public or private high school in the area. Please encourage any students that may work with your business or organization to apply.
The application package can be downloaded from The Cold Spring Area Chamber of Commerce website at www.coldspringchamber.com or by contacting the executive director, Maureen McGrath at 914-420-7995. The complete application package must be returned by Friday, March 7, 2008 and the recipient will be presented with the award at the annual Chamber of Commerce Awards Dinner, to be held at the Dutchess Manor on Thursday, March 20, 2008.
This is the fifth year that the Cold Spring Area Chamber of Commerce has funded the scholarship to a deserving Philipstown area senior. Additional funding is provided from the sale of the "Scoop the Loop" T-shirts which feature a logo donated by Ester Baumgarten, widow of Philip. T-shirts are available at www. coldspringchamber.com . For information about the scholarship, other Chamber programs and services or the Annual Awards Dinner, please visit the website or call 265-3200.
