Ol' Fashioned Maple Sugaring at Hudson Highlands Nature Museum
 | | Environmental Educator, Carl Heitmuller explains how the trees are tapped for sap |
| Get a taste of ol'fashioned maple sugaring as the Hudson Highlands Nature Museum hosts its award winning Maple Sugar Tours from February 23 through March 22 with a special tour on Friday March 21. Tours start every half hour and run from 11:30am until 3pm every Saturday and Sunday.
Museum Educators will guide 45-minute outdoor walking tours. This experience will include learning how to tap a maple tree, how to collect the sap, and how the sap boils down in an evaporator to become maple syrup. Education Coordinator, Judy Onufer, comments, "Sap is collected at a time when some snow remains on the ground, it is muddy, and cold rain is common. Yet, those of us who are involved in maple sugaring love this time of year. The wildlife is active, the air is fresh, and the exercise feels great! So, please join us as we walk through field and forest for this exhilarating program - be sure to dress warmly and wear boots!" Tours end at the Museum's farmhouse for the syrup taste challenge, where maple syrup, gifts and hot cocoa can be purchased. Maple Sugaring takes place at the Outdoor Discovery Center, 20 Kenridge Farm Drive, Route 9W South in Cornwall. Admission $7. Museum Members $5. Maple Sugar Tours are sponsored by Sotheby's.
