From Science to Wildlife, BOCES Day Camps Captivate Young Adventurers
It may be the middle of winter, but it's not too early for children to sign up for one of five summer day camps offered at Madden, the 120-acre outdoor and environmental center located in Kent Cliffs, NY, and operated by Putnam/Northern Westchester BOCES Center for Environmental Education.
Children ages 7 to 10 can experience the Young Scientist Outdoor Exploration Camps, where they can spend one week or two exploring forests, fields, and wetlands around Madden while testing their skills as science detectives, designing their own experiments with chemistry, pond studies, and other natural processes. There's even an optional overnight, complete with campfire.
For the 10- to 12-year-old crowd, there's Wild About Wildlife Camp, where children get to know the wildlife of New York State. Animal lovers will experience Madden's collection of live reptiles and birds of prey, visit with a gray wolf, meet a falconer, and track and research wildlife at Madden.
Not for the faint of heart, Eco Engineers camp is for those children ages 10 to 13 who are fascinated by the natural world. This camp teaches children to look at nature the way engineers and scientists do, when they mimic nature to solve problems and develop technology. An expert in this "biomimicry" will guide the children in observing nature, drawing, designing, and experimenting as scientists do.
For kids who want to experience camping and living off the land, there's Adventure Week Camp. Children ages 11 to 13 can escape into the woods and build campfires, cook outdoors, track wildlife, discover edible plants, learn to treat medical emergencies, and develop survival skills. There's even an overnight backpacking trip along the Appalachian Trail.
Young Scientists Outdoor Exploration Camp runs in two sessions: July 7-11, 9am to 3pm and July 14-18, 9am to 3pm and costs $255 ($275 with optional overnight); Adventure Week Camp runs July 28-August 1 from 9am to 3pm and costs $325; Eco Engineers Camp runs from July 21-25, 9am to 3pm and costs $300; Wild About Wildlife Camp runs August 4- 8 from 9am to 3pm and costs $315. Each camp will be supervised by professional educators. Registration deadline is June 13. For more information and to get a registration packet, email summercamp@pnwboces.org or call 914-248-2335.
