Save the Date for Hudson Highlands Nature Museum Hike-A-Thon

Hikers and outdoor enthusiasts should circle Saturday, May 17 on their calendar and make plans to attend the Hudson Highlands Nature Museum's Hike-A-Thon 2008. Despite last year's cold, rainy weather on event day, the Museum's premiere Hike-A-Thon was their most successful fundraiser to date. More than 100 hikers participated generating more than $35,000 to support Museum environmental education programs. With a little cooperation from Mother Nature and participating hikers, the Museum is hoping to meet or exceed that record this year.

Sponsors have already begun to show their support, signing on to be Hike-A-Thon Trailblazers. The Museum's good friend, Walden Savings Bank has once again agreed to be the event's lead sponsor. Jacobowitz and Gubits LLP, Nugent & Hauessler, Stanley Marks & Company, Marshall and Sterling and St. Luke's Cornwall Hospital have also pledged their support as event Trailblazers.

The Hike-A-Thon will be held at the Museum's Outdoor Discovery Center at Kenridge Farm on Route 9W in Cornwall. Hike-A-Thon participants will be able to choose from a variety of trails. They range in difficulty from a very easy, stroller-friendly trail for families with young children or adults with "bum knees" to this year's new Highlands Challenge for hikers looking for a more vigorous hike, as well as the Museum's moderate to slightly challenging trails for those hikers in between. The event will start at 9am with group warm-up exercises provided by Sportsplex of New Windsor and hikers will set off soon after. The trails will be supervised until noon, giving everyone a chance to enjoy a beautiful day outdoors.

Hike-A-Thon committee members include: Susan Christensen and Kristin Jensen, event co-chairs, John Bliss, Laurel Dodge, Susan Hoff, Bob McCormick, Ed Moulton, George Muser, Matt Salino, Bill Webber, and Ellen Winchell. "We're fortunate that many of our committee members have returned for another year," said Christensen. "We learned a great deal from last year's event and are looking to make this year's even better." "Our new members have brought a wealth of fresh ideas and a new perspective to the committee," she continued.

The Hudson Highlands Nature Museum has a mission to create caretakers of the environment. To support that mission, the Museum offers programs for people of all ages - from Nature Strollers for toddlers to Meet the Animals and summer nature camps for children to evening speaker programs for adults. The Museum also offers weekend nature programs for families, as well as nature education to thousands of schoolchildren each year.

The Museum's Annual Wildflower Sale will also be held on May 17 from 10am to 2pm at the same location as the Hike- A-Thon.

Hikers are required to register for the event so that all participants may be accommodated. Registration forms, event details, and sponsorship opportunities are available by calling 845-534-5506, ext. 204.
