Inaccurate Characterization of Haldane Capital Bond Proposition Choices Dear Editor:
Mike Turton's article about the school board meeting of 1/ 29/08 in which Haldane's Capital Bond project was discussed reports that "There also seemed to be support for dividing the project into two propositions as a means of giving taxpayers at least some choice." This is not a wholly accurate characterization of what happened at the meeting. Mr. Turton failed to mention that Trustee Mike Junjulas advocated for keeping the bond issue as one single proposition, and there was some discussion that questioned the wisdom of dividing the issue when it was generally accepted that all items John D'Angelo described in his presentation were in need of replacement or repair. Splitting the bond issue into two propositions risks losing voter approval for one proposition possibly leaving some needed repairs unfunded. It is disingenuous to omit the differing opinion and may serve to actually influence the school board's judgement as they craft the bond proposition. Furthermore, this omission influences voters, most of whom were not in attendance and did not hear the details of Mr. D'Angelos's report about the needed repairs.
For those who did not attend and would like to listen to this meeting about the Capital Bond project a free podcast is available on iTunes.
