The American Red Cross in Greater New York (ARC/GNY) - Putnam/West Point responded to the February 4 morning fire at a unit that was part of a cluster of attached cabins at 3160 Route 9 in Philipstown.
Mary Ellen Douglas, a Patterson resident who is assistant director of emergency response for ARC/GNY in Putnam and West Point, along with volunteers Tony Bardes of Cold Spring and Greg Amato of Mahopac, responded to the scene to assist three adults and four children from two households with temporary housing and financial assistance for clothing, food and other immediate needs. Mr. Bardes is an advisory board member of ARC/GNY - Putnam/West Point. His wife, Lorelei, also is a Red Cross volunteer. Mr. Amato is a Red Cross Disaster Action Team (DAT) captain and an advisory board member. At emergencies, the Red Cross also assists first responders.
During this emergency, the Red Cross supported firefighters from the North Highlands Fire Department (504 Fishkill Road, Cold Spring). During 2007, the Red Cross responded to 10 fires and other emergencies in Putnam County, assisting 18 adults and children with food, shelter and/or counseling. Red Cross programs and services for the residents of Putnam County are supported by donations from local residents, business and organizations.
All funds raised in Putnam remain in the county to help the Red Cross assist residents affected by fires, flooding and other emergencies. Donations can be sent to ARC/GNY - Putnam, The Lawlor Building, Route 311 and 164, Patterson NY 10524. Telephone is 845-938-4100.
The American Red Cross in Greater New York is a key humanitarian partner and a vital participant in New York's plans and programs to help the nine million people in New York City and Orange, Putnam, Rockland and Sullivan counties prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies. ARC/GNY provides immediate aid to more than 100,000 people affected by 3,000 emergencies a year, including fires, floods, building collapses and blackouts. Given the uncertainties of today's world, the chapter is accelerating its collaboration with partner agencies to develop and implement readiness plans to respond to major natural and man-made disasters. The chapter also helps New York residents and businesses prepare for emergencies by offering hundreds of courses in first aid, CPR and aquatics and free emergency preparedness training programs and resources.
ARC/GNY is not a governmental organization and relies on individual and corporate gifts, special events and grants from foundations and local, state and federal government to fund its essential programs and services.
