Karen Dunn to Run for Reelection as a Cold Spring Village Trustee This is her announcement:
"Karen Dunn, representing the Unity Party, announced on Monday, February 11, 2008, that she is running for re-election as a Cold Spring Village Trustee in the March 18, 2008 election. Dunn, a resident of the village for 27 years, hopes to be re-elected to one of two spots in the upcoming election.
"Ms. Dunn grew up in nearby Garrison, graduated high school from Friends Seminary in NYC, and attended college at NYU and, later, at Sarah Lawrence College. Early in her career she worked for The Experiment in International Living, both in Vermont and in the Washington, DC, office. In 1972 Ms. Dunn returned to the Hudson Valley. In 1975 she married John Dunn, and in 1980 they moved to Cold Spring with their daughter, Alicia. She was a leader for both the Brownies Scouts and the Girl Scouts, and she served as a board member on the Cold Spring/Garrison Area Chamber of Commerce.
"Late in 2004, Ms Dunn retired from Boscobel Restoration after 22 years. While at Boscobel, Ms. Dunn held several positions including those of Assistant Director and Director of Marketing and Special Events. Her responsibilities included day-to-day operations, interacting with both employees and visitors, developing and implementing programs for the museum, and developing and overseeing Boscobel's marketing budget.
"Although Ms. Dunn made a successful bid for Village Trustee in 2006, her involvement in local politics began in 1999 when plans for a development at the old lumberyard property were unveiled. In an effort to have a project that was appropriate to that area of the village and one that retained the vibrant character of Cold Spring's waterfront, she began attending meetings of the Planning, Zoning and Historic Review boards, as well as those of the Village Board. The end result of all the hard work and dialogue between the various parties involved now stands at the waterfront garnering many compliments from both residents and visitors alike.
"As a trustee, Dunn has brought many of her skills to local government, among them the desire and ability to listen to fellow residents, planning and budgeting skills, and her keen interest in the future of the Village. She has been actively involved as the Village Board's liaison to the Special Board for the Comprehensive Plan and Local Waterfront Revitalization Program (LWRP.) During her two-year term, Dunn has also been working with the rest of the Village Board on issues such as recycling, securing permanent access to Cold Spring's water supply, reviewing volunteer board practices, fiscal responsibility, and the day-to-day concerns that come before the Board.
"If re-elected, Dunn looks forward to once again working with the Mayor and other trustees and residents to deal with issues in ways that will ensure a government that represents the interests of its citizens, to explore new opportunities, and to plan for a future that will retain the aspects of village life that are so important to our community as we move into the future."
