Local Acupuncturist Ron Hershey Visits Haldane

Ron Hershey, a licensed acupuncturist, spoke to Dennis Cairl's Global 9 History and Geography classes and Mark Patinella's Biology class about traditional Chinese medicine. Mr. Hershey discussed some specific cases that he treated with great success using acupuncture, including the restoration of a young girl's loss of hearing.

The highlight of the presentation was an acupuncture demonstration. Social Studies teachers Dennis Cairl and Brian Ogden volunteered to be patients. Mr. Cairl had a needle inserted in his left shoulder and Mr. Ogden had a needle placed in his left wrist. Mr. Hershey's daughter Sarah had a needle placed in the middle of her forehead. The needles were strategically placed to address particular health issues such as pain and sinus headaches. Mr. Hershey also discussed another technique called cupping, where small heated cups are placed on the skin in specific locations to treat common ailments. Cupping is often used in conjunction with acupuncture treatments. The cupping demonstration was done on Dennis Cairl.

Ron Hershey and his partner Gail Reichstein comprise the East Mountain Center for Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine. They have offices in Cold Spring and Croton. Many thanks go to Mr. Hershey for his interesting and informative presentation.
