Howland Center Celebrates Women's History Month

It was in 1987 that the month of March was selected to officially give recognition to the long neglected history of women in America. The Howland Cultural Center will celebrate Women's History Month with an exhibition of thirteen artists of the Hudson Valley. Art Women @ Work, will be on exhibit from March 1 through March 30 with an opening reception on Saturday, March 8, from 2- 5pm. During the reception, several artists will give talks about their work, starting at 3:30pm. A second program will be offered at a closing reception on Sunday, March 30 at which time artist Johanne Renbeck will present Bears and Dreams, a poetry performance at 2pm. Artist members will host the closing reception

A splendid selection of oil paintings and watercolors, sculpture, photography, collages, etchings, wood-fired ceramics, and artist books will be presented by Mimi Czajka Graminski, Amy R. Farrell, Jennifer P. Haydock, Victoria S. Hayes, Susan Hennelly, Tanya Kukucka, Joan Blazis Levitt, Lillian Lovett, Amy Manso, Bibiana Huang Matheis, Allison Palmer, Johanne Renbeck, and Tilly Strauss.

The National Women's History Project, a twenty-eight year-old non-profit, nonpartisan, educational organization whose mission is to honor, recognize, and celebrate the diverse historic accomplishments of women by providing information and educational materials and programs, will celebrate women's history month with this year's theme of Women's Art Women's Vision 2008. "Our theme is to honor the originality , beauty, imagination, and multiple dimensions of women's lives. The history of women and art is quintessential women's history. It is the story of amazing women's accomplishments acclaimed at the time but written out of history. This year's theme provides a special opportunity to discover and celebrate women's visual arts in a variety of forms and mediums that help expand our perceptions of ourselves and each other."

The Howland Cultural Center also honors women in the arts with this outstanding exhibition of these thirteen artists. Art Women @ Work first gathered in January, 2006 at the invitation of painter Tilly Strauss and photographer Bibiana Huang Matheis who felt a need for community in their solitary work as artists. The group, comprised of ten active members, meets once a month, with artists taking turns hosting the meeting at their studios. Members note that over time they have created an incredible sisterhood that encourages individual growth and gives each artist courage to become more fully herself. To this end, the group has refined a beautifully effective format for presentation and critique of work. By sharing their artist journeys with each other, they gain invaluable inspiration and support. Members plan to share this successful approach as part of their artists' talk at the Howland Cultural Center on March 8.

The Howland Cultural Center Art Gallery is open every Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 1- 5pm. Exception to this schedule is Sundays, March 2 and 16, when the gallery is closed to the general viewing public as the Howland Chamber Music Circle will present concerts at 4pm. The public is invited to the opening and closing receptions, March 8 and 30 respectively. The Howland Cultural Center is located at the east end of Main
