Mount Gulian Celebrates Women's History Month
Mount Gulian Historic Site, Fishkill, celebrates Women's History Month on Saturday, March 8 from 4pm to 6pm with a multi-faceted program that focuses on women in literature.
A discussion and book signing of Bluebird or the Invention of Happiness will be given by author Sheila Kohler. The book brings the fascinating period of the French Revolution and its aftermath to life. With her portrait of noblewoman Lucy Dillon, who came to the Hudson Valley and recreated herself as a landowner and farmer, Ms. Kohler offers a wonderful story of a "new genus" of womanhood in the late 18th century.
The multiple dimensions of women's lives are further conveyed through the presentation, Shakespeare's Women: How Strong Are They? by Joanne Zipay, Founder and Artistic Director of the New York City based Judith Shakespeare Company. Are the women in Shakespeare's plays really as strong as we think they are? Are they as oppressed as we think they are? What's the real story? Ms. Zipay reads several women's roles from the plays that lead to a number of possible answers to these questions.
Admission is $7 adults; $4 children. Reservations are not required, but seating is limited. For more information call 845- 831-8172.
