Kent Library Director Attends Literary Lunch with Seniors
Local resident Kathie Dillon discusses We Were the Mulvaneys by Joyce Carol Oates with Kent Public Library Director Frank Rees and Clover Lake residents, Ingrid Schultz, Veronica O'Day and Ruth Pell.
Residents of The Plaza at Clover Lake, Carmel's senior living community, met and welcomed Kent Public Library Director Frank Rees at their recent Literary Lunch.
"They are quite an interesting group," Rees said.
The Literary Lunch program was first launched in 2003 by Kent librarian Linda McTighe and has been a popular event with both Clover Lake and area residents ever since.
"It is always well attended," said Clover Lake Director Kathryn Devan.
In preparation for the Feb. 3 gathering, residents were asked to read We Were the Mulvaneys, Joyce Carol Oates' 26th novel that chronicles the fall from grace of a once socially elite family. The book, which was the January 2001 selection of the Oprah Book Club, was popular among this reading group as well.
"I've never read a book by her that I didn't like," said Clover Lake resident Dorothy Ephraim.
Approximately one dozen people participated in the lively discussion. Several women found parallel events from their own lives while reading the book. But Ephraim was taken aback by the behavior of some of the book's characters.
"I was shocked that they could say such things about their parents," Ephraim exclaimed.
My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult is the next book up for discussion. Copies of the book are available through the Kent Public Library.
The Plaza at Clover Lakes invites area residents to join in the discussion and to attend the buffet lunch that follows. The next Literary Lunch will be held on Mon., May 5 at 11:30am. at the Plaza at Clover Lake, 838 Fair St., in Carmel. For reservations call: (845) 225-4111.
