Percussionist Arrucci Brings Quartet to Arts on the Lake

Percussionist John Arrucci is also a composer which, in turn, makes him a creator, an inventor, and an architect.

As a creator, Arrucci causes the occurrence of music which previously hadn't existed. As an inventor, he thinks up new musical forms devising them for the first time. As an architect, he draws the music, designs its plans and supervises its construction.

So on Sat., March 1 at 8pm when The John Arrucci Quartet performs at the Lake Carmel Cultural Center on Route 52 in Kent Lakes, the audience will not only meet quartet musicians Joe Basar (guitar), Gary Versace (accordion, organ), and Jerome Harris (acoustic bass guitar), they will also meet the composer, creator, inventor, architect, and teacher (Princeton University) who is John Arrucci (drums, percussion).

Composing has always been a part of Arrucci's life as a musician. Step into his basement studio in Kent and observe the bookcase tucked against the wall and surrounded by too many percussion instruments to count or name. Lining the shelves are thick, black composition and improvisation binders each crammed with musical ideas that Arrucci has notated.

Arrucci pointed to one resting on top of his upright piano. "Right now a lot of composition material is in there. About 15 or 20 compositions which are almost finished," he said. Arrucci said when the mood is upon him, he will open the book, play through the saved pieces to "just see if the composition is ready to be completed." If it doesn't feel right and no inspiration strikes, Arrucci simply turns the page and moves on. "I play through it and I enjoy hearing it again," he said. "I just see if the music is ready to tell me what happens next."

For Arrucci, the thrill of composing lies within the creative process itself. "You get open to creativity. If you don't have set perimeters, the sky is the limit. And that can be very nice," he said.

An acclaimed master percussionist, Arrucci has recorded with Michael Brecker, Livingston Taylor, The Brooklyn Philharmonic. He has been commissioned by members of the New York Philharmonic and the Manhattan Marimba Quartet. His work is featured in numerous motion pictures including Arlington Road, Killing Zoe and The Truth about Charlie. He has recorded music for The Oprah Winfrey Show and performed with Mariah Carey on The Rosie O'Donnell Show. AT&T. Coca-Cola, Volvo and Snapple are some of the major brand names that have showcased his percussion work in their commercials.
