Drawing Revealed to be Screened at Depot Theatre

What is drawing? Traditionally, drawing has been a preliminary process in the development of fully realized art works- a visual thinking process, a tool for mapping out ideas. More recently, drawing is seen not only as a means to an end, but also as a legitimate end in itself. Also - the media artists use to draw is expanded recent times a lot: artists are drawing with cutting into paper with a sharp blade, they are using sewing machine to create lines and "sketching" by placing small rocks on a studio table. All these sides of drawing are the subject of the film Drawing Revealed: Artists in Conversation, which will be screened at the Depot Theater on Thursday, March 6 at 7:30pm.

This 35-minute documentary, called "absorbing" by the New York Times, is directed by Jaanika Peerna, co-produced by Susan English and Jaanika Peerna and edited by Michael Enright. The film was made in conjunction with the recently concluded exhibition, Drawing Revealed, at the Garrison Art Center. The exhibition, curated by English and Peerna, showcased the drawings of eleven artists whose varied and sometimes unusual approaches to drawing are discussed in the film. The artists share their work and thoughts on drawing in the context of their studios.

The screening will be followed by a discussion with the artists Stan Stroh, Thomas Huber, and Jaq Belcher, along with the filmmakers. A reception will follow at the Garrison Art Center. Admission $5.

Copies of the film are available on DVD from jaanika@highlands.com.
