Safety Tips in Advance of National Poison Week
Every 13 seconds, someone is poisoned. Approximately 2.4 million people in the United States are poisoned annually and over 167,000 of them in New York State. Help reduce the number of poisonings by using safety locks on all drawers and cabinets; storing all medications, chemicals and other dangerous products out of sight and out of the reach of children; and storing poisons in their original containers.
March 16-22 is National Poison Prevention Week. This is a good time to check around your house for any unused or improperly stored potential poisons.
Please help spread the word that help is only a phone call away. For a poison emergency or to simply ask a question about a product, call the national poison helpline at 1-800-222- 1222. The helpline is answered by certified specialists in poisons including nurses, pharmacists and toxicologists. It is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. All calls are free and confidential. Poison Control Center services are also available in over 100 languages.
