Poughkeepsie Men Charged With Theft-Related Crimes
Sheriff Donald B. Smith reports the arrest of two Poughkeepsie men on a host of theft-related criminal charges occurring in Putnam and Dutchess Counties.
In November (2007) the Sheriffs Office received a complaint that a car had been forcibly entered while it was parked at the Highland Plaza in the Town of Southeast. Deputy Jason Woilman responded. Upon his arrival he noticed that those responsible smashed a passenger window to a Dodge Caravan to gain entry. The thieves then stole a wallet containing an Ipod, money, gift and credit cards from within the vehicle. Later, Deputy Woilman learned that similar incidents occurred in the Towns of Kent and East Fishkill. The case was then turned over to investigators from the Sheriff's Bureau of Criminal Investigation.
Sheriff's Investigators, working with detectives from the Town of Kent Police Department, Dutchess County Sheriff's Office and City of Poughkeepsie Police Department met and discussed the similarities of reported incidents each agency had in their jurisdictions. Their efforts resulted in the development of two suspects responsible for this crime spree. Last week Sheriff's Investigators arrested 52-year-old Herman L. Ortega and Ayed S. Haddad, 41 years old, both of Poughkeepsie. Mr. Ortega was charged with three counts of Forgery in the Second Degree and three counts of Criminal Possession of Stolen Property in the Fourth Degree, both felony crimes. Mr. Ortega is accused of possessing and using a stolen credit card while signing for the purchases he made. Mr. Haddad, who is currently on parole, was charged with Criminal Mischief In the Second Degree, a class "D" felony, and Petit Larceny, a class "A" misdemeanor. Mr. Haddad is accused of breaking into the Dodge Grand Caravan which was parked in the Southeast parking lot and stealing the wallet from within. During the investigation investigators learned that Mr. Haddad allegedly stole $500 worth of scrap aluminum from a outside a residence located in the Town of Patterson during the month of December. He was additionally charged with Petit Larceny in connection with that reported crime.
Additionally, criminal charges were lodged against the pair by the other law enforcement agencies for the crimes that were committed in their jurisdictions. Messrs. Ortega and Mr. Haddad were arraigned before Kent Town Justice Peter Collins. Justice Collins set Mr. Ortega's bail at $50,000 cash or secured bond. Mr. Haddad's bail was set at $50,000 cash or $500,000 secured bond. Sheriff Smith praised the outstanding police work involved in apprehending the suspects accused of being involved in this crime spree spanning two counties. "This case was solved by members of law enforcement agencies working together and comparing notes," he said. "The team approach employed throughout this investigation resulted in the suspects being captured, removed from our streets and being held accountable by the criminal justice system," Sheriff Smith concluded.
A conviction any of the most serious charges, a class "D" felony, may result in a term of incarceration determined by the court not to exceed seven years in a New York State correctional facility.
