Community Invited to Lent Labyrinth Walk at Presbyterian Church
The community is invited to attend a Labyrinth Walk this Sunday, March 2 from 4- 6pm at the First Presbyterian Church of Philipstown in Cold Spring. There will be a brief presentation and preparation given by labyrinth facilitator Lynn Brown of Garrison, followed by time for walking a 24-foot portable canvas labyrinth in the church fellowship hall (see photo).
The labyrinth is a circular meditative walking path, a design which dates back at least to Ancient Greece. The labyrinth to be used this Sunday is a modified Chartres style, with 7 circuitous paths winding into the center and back out again. This design is based on one found on the floor of the Chartres Cathedral in France, dating back to medieval times. In those days, Christians walked labyrinths in designated European cathedrals as a substitute for making a pilgrimage to the Holy Land which was then both costly and dangerous.
This week's labyrinth walk is part of the observance of Lent, which, for Christians, is a time of introspection and spiritual renewal. The meditative walk is suggested as a tool to deepen the spiritual journey through Lent.
The First Presbyterian Church is located one block off of Routes 9D and 301 in Cold Spring, at 10 Academy Street. Phone 265-3220 for more information.
