BOCES Hosts Sustainability Education Forum for School Administrators
The Curriculum Center and the Center for Environmental Education at Putnam/Northern Westchester BOCES will present a Sustainability Education Forum for Administrative Innovation on Friday, May 2, at the BOCES campus in Yorktown Heights. Dr. Marla Gardner, Director of the Curriculum and Instructional Services Department at BOCES, says that because many school districts are setting sustainability goals, now is the time to provide administrators with cutting edge opportunities to learn about the interconnections and interdependency among ecological, economic, and social systems. "Sustainability education is so important now," she says. "We want to teach children how to take action in their communities."
The goal of sustainability education is to engage students in creative problem solving and critical thinking about global interdependence. This forum is designed for administrators interested in integrating sustainability education practices as a means for preparing students to be productive, engaged citizens. Speakers who are leaders in the field of sustainability include Jack Byrne, co-founder of the Center for a Sustainable Future at the Foundation for Our Future; Betty Sue Flowers, an advocate for systemic change, who has worked with Bill Moyers and the World Business Council in Geneva; and Megan Camp, vice president and program director of Shelburne Farms and lead consultant and partner for the Institute for Sustainable Communities.
Applicants should register by April 15 online by going to www.pnwboces.org/catalog and selecting "Curriculum Center." Click on "Search Catalog," and scroll down and click on Sustainability Education workshop to register.
