Forensic Evidence Links Beacon Man With Philipstown Larcenies
Putnam County Sheriff Donald B. Smith reports the arrest of a 35-year-old Beacon man accusing him of breaking into commercial vehicles, owned by a Philipstown business, and stealing equipment and various power tools from within.
On May 25, 2007, the Sheriff's Office received a complaint from the owner of Ricci Electric Company, located at Route 9 in the Town of Philipstown. He reported that three of his company's vehicles were forcibly broken into, causing approximately $4,500 worth of damage. Once gaining access into the parked vans, the thief stole various power tools and equipment valued at $6,800. Uniformed deputies responded to conduct the preliminary investigation.
After taking the initial report, the matter was referred to Investigator Vincent Martin of the Sheriff's Bureau of Criminal Investigation. He and members of the Sheriff's Identification and Forensics Unit responded to the business at which time the crime scene was searched for forensic evidence. Evidence, including DNA collection swabs, was collected from the crime scene and sent to the New York State Police Laboratory in Albany for analysis. Laboratory personnel were able to extract DNA from the collected evidence and placed the sample in the state-wide DNA data bank. The DNA data bank search resulted in a match between the sample collected by sheriff's investigators at the crime scene and that of Mr. Ernest J. Gordineer, a convicted criminal.
After consulting with the Putnam County District Attorney's Office, Investigators Martin and Nicholas DePerno, Jr. arrested Mr. Gordineer. At the time of his arrest, he was incarcerated inside the Putnam County Correctional Facility on unrelated criminal charges. They charged Mr. Gordineer with Grand Larceny in the Third Degree and Criminal Mischief in the Second Degree, both class "D" felony crimes. Mr. Gordineer was arraigned before Kent Town Justice Joseph Esposito, Sr., on behalf of the Philipstown
Justice Court. Due to his lengthy criminal history, Justice Esposito ordered Mr. Gordineer held without bail at the correctional facility. Mr. Gordineer is scheduled to appear in the Town of Philipstown Court on March 12, 2008 at 5pm.
A conviction of either one of the felony crimes he is charged with may result in a prison sentence imposed by the court for a term of up to seven years in a New York State correctional facility.
