Cajun & Zydeco Dance at St. Philip's Supports the New Orleans Project
St. Philip's Church will be holding a Cajun & Zydeco Dance at the Parish House on Saturday, March 15, beginning at 7pm. Tickets for the dance are $25 per person. Proceeds will go to support the St. Philip's New Orleans Project, an ongoing effort to rebuild the neighborhood of Broadmoor, an area in the heart of New Orleans that was devastated by Hurricane Katrina. The event is sponsored by Shipman Associates. Music will be provided by Jesse Lége and his band and dance instruction will be given by Laura Rice.
Cajun music is a product of creolization, the cultural and ethnic gumbo that was created over centuries in the backwoods of Louisiana. It is a blend of sounds from German, Irish, Anglo-American, Afro-Caribbean and American Indian traditions. Songs are noted for their up-beat tempos, cheerful lyrics and peculiar dance rhythms. Some say it is Bluegrass with a French accent, others simply acknowledge it as the most pure form of American Folk Music. In any case, it is beautiful and fun. It has an infectious, foot-stomping sound that makes it impossible to stay seated. You have to get up and clap your hands and stamp your feet and, after a few minutes of instruction, you will be two-stepping and waltzing with the best of them. You can dance alone or with a partner, so get your best girl or best guy, call St. Philip's (424-3571) and reserve two or more tickets. You won't regret it.
If you will not be able to join in on the 15th, please buy one or more of the benefit raffle tickets. They will be on sale around town during the next two weeks (look for the bright green tickets). Prizes include Brunch for four at Peter Kelly's X20 Restaurant in Yonkers, dinner for two at the Riverview in Cold Spring, eighteen holes of golf at The Garrison and a Gourmet Picnic for four from Taste of Distinction.
Because of the generosity of the event sponsor, Shipman Associates, the entire proceeds from the dance and raffle will go to support the St. Philip's Church New Orleans Project. The project will send crews of skilled building trades people from the local area along with teams of enthusiastic volunteers to New Orleans to help with the rebuilding efforts in Broadmoor, one of the city's most historic neighborhoods. They are working in partnership with two local organizations, The Broadmoor Improvement Association and The Church of the Annunciation. These organizations and the skilled St. Philips volunteers are touching the lives of dozens of courageous residents who are working to rebuild their homes and their lives. Their motto is, 'Save the Neighborhood'.
Please come along on March 15 for a lively and fun-filled evening. It you cannot, please buy one or more of the raffle tickets or send a donation directly to the St. Philip's Church New Orleans Project at PO Box 158, Garrison, NY 10524.
