Builders Help to Build Literacy at Putnam Hospital Center
To help new mothers encourage early reading in their youngsters, the Builders Association of the Hudson Valley (BAHV) has developed the "Builders Building Literacy Program" that collects books and then distributes them to new mothers throughout their six-county service area. Working with the Literacy Volunteers of Putnam County, the BAHV recently donated 500 such books to the Birthing Center at Putnam Hospital Center (PHC). The books, which included donations from The Readers Digest Association, were then packaged in bags purchased by The Friends of the Mahopac Library for distribution.
Above, maternity patient Diana Trinchitella and her newborn son Michael of Carmel were the first recipients of the program at PHC. Shown with them, from left to right, are Birthing Center nurse Sue Hernandez, PHC community health educator Patricia Varveri, Thomas Szczepaniak of the Builders Association of the Hudson Valley and Helen LiMarzi of the Literacy Volunteers of Putnam County.
