BOCES Holds OLAS Workshop for School Districts
BOCES presented a workshop to further educate school districts on the nuances of OLAS (its Online Application System), which it began in 2000. OLAS helps teachers find jobs and school administrators find personnel such as teachers, teacher aides, assistants, administrators, and more, through an online application website. During the workshop, BOCES Deputy Superintendent Renee Gargano told her audience of school administrators what's new with the system.
"For one thing, OLAS helps you go green," said Ms. Gargano, "because you can narrow your search before printing resumes." Since its inception, OLAS has become the primary recruitment tool for more than 240 school districts in nine regions across the state.
Ms. Gargano addressed the issue of substitute-teacher and interim-teacher shortages and stressed the importance of using OLAS in these searches. "OLAS has filters, so you can search for candidates who are willing to sub or work parttime," she says. Further filters in the system help administrators narrow their searches so that they can find the ideal candidate. "If you are looking for a teacher, and you want to filter out candidates who are looking for administrative positions, you can do that," Ms. Gargano says. The system also allows administrators to narrow their searches by focusing on only those candidates who have particular teacher certifications that they are looking for.
Administrators save time and money using OLAS, according to Ms. Gargano, because by narrowing their searches electronically, they don't waste time looking through resumes of candidates who are not qualified for jobs. In fact, new technology is being added to OLAS all the time. "It will continue to grow and get even better in years to come," Ms. Gargano says.
